Please share a little bit about the work that Maine Family Planning does.
Our mission is to ensure that all Maine people have access to high-quality, culturally relevant and affordable sexual and reproductive health care services, comprehensive sexual health education, and the right to control their sexual and reproductive lives. In addition to the 18 clinics in Maine’s small cities and rural communities that provide clinical services, we operate a mobile health program, provide family support services Downeast, and train Maine educators to teach accurate, comprehensive sexuality education.
What public health issues is MFP currently focusing on, and how has your work impacted the community this year?
Our mobile medical unit, Health on Wheels, currently focuses on HIV prevention and treatment, Hepatitis C treatment, wound care, and substance use disorder treatment while bringing comprehensive services, including cervical cancer screenings, birth control, and reproductive healthcare. This year, we served 1,669 patients and completed 114 confirmatory HIV and 80 Hepatitis C tests, helping connect people to ongoing care. By consistently returning to the communities we serve, we have built trust and created a program where people can be heard and receive the care they need that day, because improving health means addressing the whole person.

Our work to protect sexual and reproductive health care never stops. Whether you’re making a care package for a patient, advocating for policies that expand access to health care, or learning how to talk with elected officials about reproductive health, your actions make a difference.
