Multiple Positions Available Warming Center Support Staff Healthy Acadia, a non-profit community health coalition providing community health services primarily in Washington and Hancock counties and across Maine, urgently seeks multiple seasonal Warming Center Support Staff at our Seasonal Overnight Warming Center in Ellsworth, Maine. The Warming Center is a seasonal emergency shelter operated through Healthy Acadia and provides people who are experiencing homelessness a warm place to stay nightly from November through April. 

Warming center staff provide operational support throughout the shift to maintain a welcoming safe place that protects guests, volunteers, and staff. The Warming Center is a nightly operation, open seven days per week, including holidays, from 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. The ideal candidate has experience providing direct service to high-risk community members; however, we are willing to provide all necessary training to the right individuals. 

The season is approximately November 15, 2024, through April 30, 2025. 

  • Position term: November 15, 2024, through April 30, 2025 
  • Job Status: Temporary, seasonal work, including part-time and full-time hours 
  • Benefits include accrued paid time off and eligible paid holidays The Warming Center is a nightly operation, open seven days per week from 4 p.m. to 7 a.m., including all holidays. 

Various shifts are available: 

  • 15-hour shifts: 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. 
  • 8-hour shifts: 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. 
  • 7-hour shifts: 12 a.m. to 7 a.m. 

Responsibilities 

  • Welcomes and supports community members who are unhoused or unsafely housed to stay at the Warming Center anytime during the Center hours (4 p.m. to 7 a.m.). 
  • Ensures compliance with community expectations uniformly and consistently. 
  • Conducts intake and orientation of guests. 
  • Performs opening and closing duties including distributing supplies (bedding, hygiene, food), facility laundry, routine sanitation of high-touch surfaces, sweeping, mopping, snow removal from walkways, and other duties as assigned 
  • Maintains accurate nightly checklists and notes, manually and electronically. All staff are required to review previous notes electronically, as the center is dynamic and changes nightly. 
  • Effectively resolves conflict and de-escalates challenging situations. 
  • Provides information to the supervisor after each shift regarding participants, supplies, incident reports, etc. 
  • Documents and informs appropriate staff of any items that need to be ordered, repaired, or replaced. 
  • Always adheres to a strict code of confidentiality regarding guests and fellow staff members 
  • Support and provide crisis intervention: identify, assess, and intervene as needed to maintain the safety of guests, volunteers, and staff 
  • Provide guests with advocacy, education, and referrals for community resources and services. 
  • Assists in maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment. 
  • Responsible for knowing and following the Warming Center’s policies and procedures. 
  • Works as a team with other colleagues and volunteers on shift and can work independently without direct supervision. 
  • Attends all staff meetings and training as assigned. 
  • Always represents the organization professionally.

  • Hearing and vision adequate for interaction with guests, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to stay awake and alert for the entirety of the shift. 
  • Ability to walk, bend, stand, sit, reach, stoop, pull, sit, and squat. 
  • Ability to regularly lift as much as 50 pounds. 
  • Reasoning ability to make decisions that reflect consistency with the philosophy, policies, and procedures of Healthy Acadia, INSPIRE Recovery Center, and the Warming Center 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • High School Diploma/GED. 
  • Knowledge of services available to people experiencing low income and homelessness in the service area through local social services agencies, or the demonstrated ability to obtain such knowledge. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently. Ability to appropriately assess a situation and take corrective action, as necessary. 
  • Demonstrated ability to provide crisis intervention and to follow procedures in crisis situations. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Good computer skills. Familiarity with data collection programs, Google Drive, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word. 
  • Six months to one year experience working with at-risk and/or vulnerable populations preferred, but willing to train.
